Kyoto Whisky Nishijin-ori Label Sherry Cask Wins Gold at ISC 2026

Two limited-edition whiskies from Kyoto Miyako Distillery's "Kyoto Whisky Nishijin-ori Label" series have claimed medals at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2026, held in the United Kingdom. The Kyoto Whisky Nishijin-ori Label Sherry Cask won the Gold Medal, while the Nishijin-ori Label Mizunara Cask earned the Silver Medal — marking the first international recognition for both expressions.

The Nishijin-ori Label series is available exclusively within Kyoto Prefecture, making these awards a notable achievement for a hyper-regional product competing on a global stage.

Tasting Notes

Gold Medal: Sherry Cask

Post-matured in casks previously used to age sherry wine, the Sherry Cask delivers rich aromas of raisins and dried fruits alongside a deep, dark chocolate-like complexity. The palate is smooth, with notes of nuts and caramel, leading to a warm, lingering finish.

Silver Medal: Mizunara Cask

Post-matured in mizunara (Japanese oak) casks, this expression features sweet aromas of vanilla and coconut, complemented by an elegant, sandalwood-like woody fragrance unique to the native Japanese timber. The soft entry transitions to honey-like sweetness with gentle spice, finishing with a pleasant barrel character that reflects a blend of Japanese delicacy and Western distilling technique.

About the Nishijin-ori Label

A defining feature of this series is the use of Nishijin-ori — a traditional Kyoto textile craft — for the bottle labels. The softly textured, handwoven labels underscore the exclusivity of the Kyoto-only release and have found favour both as gifts and as a personal indulgence for those seeking a special occasion whisky.
