Three new decorative trays crafted from actual kabuki stage costumes are set to go on sale at Shochiku Kabukiya Honpo's Kobikicho Hiroba store and the Shochiku online store starting June 3, 2026. The items are part of Shochiku's ongoing "Exceptional Creations" (とっておきの逸品を作りました) project, which gives new life to costumes and stage props that have been used in real kabuki productions.
About the "Exceptional Creations" Project
The "Exceptional Creations" project upcycles garments and large props from the kabuki stage, transforming them into new items with fresh value. This latest release marks the fifth installment in the costume upcycling series and was produced in collaboration with Shochiku Costume Co., Ltd. and Sotansha Sadaemon Shoten.
The Featured Costume: "Otsue Dojoji" — Fuji Musume
The costumes used for this collection were worn during the dance piece Otsue Dojoji (大津絵道成寺). The piece evokes the bell-offering scene reminiscent of Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji, while incorporating motifs from Otsu-e — a style of folk painting that was popular during the Edo period. The three trays feature the costume worn for the "Fuji Musume" (Wisteria Maiden) role, celebrated for its exceptional brilliance on stage.
The fabric is chirimen (縮緬), a type of silk crepe. It is woven with untwisted warp threads and strongly twisted weft threads, then scoured so that fine, irregular wrinkles develop across the surface. These wrinkles, known as shibo, are the hallmark texture of chirimen.
