Ardnahoe Distillery, established in 2018 on Scotland's Isle of Islay, is adding a new expression to its core range: a cask strength whisky called "Batch 1," set to arrive at whisky retailers across Japan from April 15, 2026.
The release marks the third core range offering from Ardnahoe. Following the distillery's debut 5-year-aged bottling in May 2024, subsequent releases — "Infinite Loch" and "Bolsa" — each established themselves as pillars of the range, earning recognition both domestically and internationally.

A Japan-exclusive single cask launched in January 2026 sold out almost immediately upon release, reflecting the strong appetite for Ardnahoe expressions in the Japanese market.
Batch 1 is assembled exclusively from first-fill bourbon barrels selected from the distillery's 5-year-aged stock, with no water added — bottled at full cask strength of 60.9% ABV. The peat level is set at 40 PPM, consistent with previous releases, delivering the characteristic smokiness and structure associated with Islay malts.
On the production side, two pieces of equipment define Ardnahoe's house character: one of Scotland's longest lyne arms, and the only worm tub condenser currently in operation on Islay. The worm tub runs copper coils through a wooden tub cooled by water drawn from Loch Ardnahoe, allowing the spirit vapors to condense slowly and producing a layered, full-bodied character.
As a multi-cask batch release, Batch 1 brings those distillery-specific qualities into particularly sharp focus. At an advance tasting held during Whisky Festival Tokyo in December 2025, the expression drew positive responses for its intensity and richness — standing apart from the diluted versions of the range.

With the recent reopening of Port Ellen Distillery, Ardnahoe has moved from being Islay's newest distillery to occupying a more established role within the island's whisky scene — combining traditional production methods with modern quality standards.
One of the distinctive appeals of a younger distillery is the ability to follow its development in real time. Each successive release shows how the spirit's character evolves — an experience that distilleries with longer histories cannot offer in quite the same way.

About Ardnahoe Distillery
Ardnahoe is the 9th distillery on the Isle of Islay, founded in 2017 and fully operational since 2019. The name derives from Scottish Gaelic, meaning "hill overlooking a hollow." The distillery faces the Sound of Islay, with views across to the Paps of Jura — a landscape that inspired its logo design. All water used in production is drawn from Loch Ardnahoe, one of the deepest lochs on the island.
