Cameras That Symbolize Canon's History

Canon's history began with a research laboratory established in 1933 with the aim of producing high-end cameras in Japan. Since then, the company has produced many hit products and supported the evolution of cameras. The five models miniaturized this time are representative products that symbolize that history.

① IV Sb (4Sb) Type (Released December 1952)

IV Sb (4Sb) type

Among models of this type, it was the first in the world to be equipped with an X contact that synchronizes with a Speedlight (also called a strobe). With the best functional precision and finish, it was hailed as a classic that holds a place in the history of Japanese cameras.

② 7S Type (Released April 1965)

7S type

By then, Canon had already brought seven of its high-end 35mm SLR cameras to market. The history of Canon's high-end rangefinder-coupled 35mm cameras lasted 32 years, supported by many users, and came to an end with this model.

③ F-1 (Released March 1971)

F-1

This high-end 35mm system SLR camera was born from five years of development and an enormous investment of money and effort, comparable to the development costs of dozens of cameras, combining the full range of Canon's technology. It also came with system accessories, including the first fully unattended automatic shooting system in camera history, and was embraced by many photography enthusiasts, starting with professional photographers.

④ EOS 5D Mark II (Released November 2008)

EOS 5D Mark II

This is the successor to the "EOS 5D," a digital SLR camera that was among the first to adopt a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor for advanced amateurs and has been well regarded in the market for a long time. It is equipped with a wide range of features that expand the scope of shooting, including full HD video recording, a first for the EOS series.

⑤ EOS R1 (Released November 2024)

EOS R1

Equipped with the newly developed imaging engine system "Accelerated Capture," it was released as the first flagship model of the "EOS R System." It is a camera built to meet the high shooting needs of professionals.

Compact Digital Cameras Back in the Spotlight

Amid renewed attention to compact digital cameras in recent years, two models have been added to the lineup for the first time: the "IXY 210F," which symbolizes the digital camera boom of the Heisei era and comes in a variety of colors, and the "PowerShot G7 X Mark III," which has won support for its high image quality and comfortable video shooting.

⑥ IXY 210F (Released February 2011)

IXY 210F

Equipped with a 12.1-megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor (back-illuminated type) and Canon's proprietary imaging engine "DIGIC 4," it can take beautiful photos with suppressed noise even at high sensitivity. Its soft, approachable form fits comfortably in the hand, and it is available in four color variations to choose from: pink, orange, blue and silver.

⑦ PowerShot G7 X Mark III (Released August 2019)

PowerShot G7 X Mark III

This was the first Canon camera to adopt a 1.0-inch, approximately 20.1-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor. Combined with the "DIGIC 8" imaging engine, it offers improved video and high-speed continuous shooting performance. It is also Canon's first compact digital camera to achieve 4K video recording without a crop, making it useful for scenes where you want to shoot wide, taking advantage of the lens's angle of view.
