About Contemporary Artist Hiroko Nakakita

© K. Kurigami
Hiroko Nakakita was born in Hyogo Prefecture. After completing the Oil Painting major in the Department of Painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, in 2006, she began working in earnest as a painter. She continues to create from studios in Kobe and California and shows her work in Japan and abroad.
Born and raised in a traditional household, she paints on the theme of the conflict between reason and emotion, and between constraint and freedom. Her work is characterized by colors born from overflowing emotion and by drips of flowing paint. In recent years, a new motif, "the cycle of life and rebirth," has been added.
In 2021, she opened her own gallery, "Hiroko Nakakita," in the former foreign settlement in Kobe. Not limiting herself to painting, she aims to develop her work in new fields beyond painting, and also co-develops products that draw on her distinctive worldview. She enriches her work with the spirituality found in Japanese culture, such as kimono, tea ceremony, dance, and crafts, further expanding her range of expression.
