About This Event

Eikando Lightup is a special evening viewing event held annually in autumn at Zenrinji Temple (commonly known as Eikando) in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto Prefecture. Eikando is renowned as one of Kyoto's premier autumn foliage destinations, famously known by the phrase "In autumn, it's Eikando for maple leaves," and the illumination takes place only during the season when the temple grounds are covered in autumn colors. This temple was founded in 853 and developed as a nenbutsu practice hall by Reverend Eikan in the late 11th century. It is now cherished as the head temple of the Seizan Zenrinji branch of Jodo Buddhism and is famous for its principal image, the "Mikaeri Amida Nyorai" (Looking-Back Amida Buddha), a rare sideways-facing Amida Buddha that captivates many worshippers. Approximately 3,000 maple trees are planted throughout the temple grounds, and in autumn, vibrant autumn foliage colors the entire mountain. During the special evening viewing, about 700 lights illuminate the autumn leaves and historic buildings in a magical way, offering a completely different landscape from the daytime. The sight of autumn foliage and Mikage-do Hall reflected on the surface of Hojo-ike Pond is particularly beautiful, with the mirror-like water surface enhancing the scenery twofold. Eikando Lightup is held annually from mid-November to early December, limited to the autumn foliage season for approximately three weeks. Daytime regular visiting and evening illumination operate on a complete turnover system, so those who wish to enjoy both must exit once and wait until the illumination start time. Eikando is conveniently accessible by public transportation within Kyoto city, and nearby are famous sites such as Nanzen-ji Temple and the Philosopher's Path. This area, where you can enjoy strolling among famous temples along with autumn foliage, is an essential destination for Kyoto tourism.
