Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri - Osaka's Most Thrilling Float Festival

Traditional Festival (matsuri)
Osaka / September

About This Event

The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri is one of Japan's most celebrated festivals, held every September in Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture. Its origins trace back to the Genroku era of the Edo period, when it began as an Inari festival to pray for bountiful harvests. With a history spanning roughly 300 years, it has become an iconic autumn tradition of Osaka, drawing huge crowds of spectators from across Japan and around the world.

The festival's greatest highlight is the yarimawashi. Hundreds of pullers sprint at full speed while hauling massive wooden danjiri floats, each weighing about four tons, then make dramatic 90-degree turns at intersections in one swift motion. The sheer force and speed of these corner turns is awe-inspiring, sending thunderous cheers through the crowds lining the streets. Atop each danjiri, a rider known as the daiku-gata leaps and dances while directing the float, as the rhythms of taiko drums, gongs, and flutes fill the air throughout the city.

The danjiri floats themselves are works of art not to be missed. Carved from Japanese zelkova and cypress, their bodies are adorned with intricate woodcarvings depicting warriors, dragons, and scenes from legendary tales, earning them the title of "moving masterpieces." During the yoimiya evening festivities, the floats are decorated with paper lanterns and parade through the streets in a dreamlike procession, offering a beauty entirely different from the daytime spectacle.

Kishiwada City is conveniently located just about 30 minutes from central Osaka on the Nankai Electric Railway, making it easy to visit alongside other Osaka sightseeing. Come experience the power of Japan's living traditions at this festival, where the entire town pulses with energy and excitement.
