Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival - One of Japan's premier cherry blossom destinations

Cherry Blossom (sakura / hanami)
Hokkaido / April

About This Event

Matsumae Park, located in Matsumae Town at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, is one of Japan's premier cherry blossom destinations with over 250 varieties and more than 10,000 cherry trees in full bloom. The cherry trees, planted by settlers from mainland Japan since the Edo period, have been carefully nurtured by local flower guardians, giving birth to many unique Matsumae varieties. Within the park, early to late-blooming varieties flower in succession over approximately one month, allowing visitors to enjoy cherry blossoms for an extended period. The magnificent contrast between Matsumae Castle, built in 1854, and the cherry blossoms creates a breathtaking scene, showcasing the atmospheric landscape unique to Japan's northernmost castle town. During the annual Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival held every spring, various events take place including nighttime cherry blossom illuminations, local gourmet food stalls, and performances of Matsumae Kagura, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The spectacular cherry blossom scenery spread across the vast 230,000 square meter grounds, combined with views overlooking the Tsugaru Strait from elevated areas, provides visitors with a special experience to fully appreciate the charm of Hokkaido's spring, creating unforgettable memories for all who visit.
