ARTIDA OUD's Pearl Journey Heads to Amakusa, With an Exhibition at THE ANOTHER MUSEUM in Shibuya From November 4

"Pearl Journey" is a journal project by the jewelry brand ARTIDA OUD, which carries the concept "Raw Scents of Glimmer." The project visits pearl-producing regions and sheds light on the nature, culture, and daily lives of each place. Its second installment, "Pearl Journey vol.02 / AMAKUSA," goes live in November 2026, and an exhibition runs at the brand's flagship store, THE ANOTHER MUSEUM, in Shoto, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.

This time, the journey leads to Amakusa in Kumamoto Prefecture, a place made up of more than 120 islands large and small. ARTIDA OUD traveled there with "white" as its theme: the white of Akoya pearls raised by the rich sea, the white of Amakusa pottery stone formed over 14 million years, and the white of history shaped by Kirishitan (Christian) culture, which has been passed down for more than 450 years.

The project presents the deep world of Amakusa's "white," woven from sea and land and from nature and human endeavor, through jewelry and art. It includes new jewelry made with Amakusa Akoya pearls and a special collaboration with designer and artist Sae Honda. Alongside photographs by 井上昌明, Sae Honda's porcelain works made with Akoya oyster shells are on display and for sale.

ARTIDA OUD extends its sympathy to everyone affected by the 2026 (Reiwa 8) Kumamoto earthquake.

Whites of the Sea

Whites of the Sea

To explore the background of the natural beauty of Akoya pearls raised in Amakusa's beautiful sea, ARTIDA OUD visited producers who have run pearl farms for generations.

The pearls grow slowly in an environment shaped by a complex coastline and a calm inland sea. Behind them is not only the bounty of nature but also the careful handwork of the producers.

Amakusa Akoya pearls

Akoya pearls are known for their luster and shine, yet each one has a different color and shape. Respecting that individuality, the project found new value in pearls that had been set aside for falling outside standard grades. This uneven beauty created by nature embodies the "raw beauty" that ARTIDA OUD treasures.

New Akoya Pearl Collection Celebrating Natural Beauty

The Akoya pearls found in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, where beautiful nature spreads out, have excellent luster and shine. Raised vigorously in the bounty of the rich sea, they are pearls that even evoke the mysteries of the natural world. Their colors and shapes are uneven, yet they have a distinctive, beautiful glow just as they are. The collection gives new life to Akoya pearls that were rejected as nonstandard and left unused. It embodies the "raw beauty" that ARTIDA OUD values.

Whites of the Earth

Whites of the Earth

In the mountains of Amakusa lies pottery stone formed over 14 million years.

Amakusa pottery stone, known as one of Japan's leading porcelain materials, has long supported a culture of beautiful white porcelain. In the pursuit of ideal whiteness, however, the iron contained in the stone has been treated as something to be removed. Today, mining pottery stone of high whiteness grows harder every year, while iron-removal technology has refined its whiteness even further.

The project traces these shifts in resources and values and takes another look at what "whiteness" really means.

Collaboration With Sae Honda

Jewelry trays made by Honda, limited to 25 pieces in total. Clockwise from the top right: Tray M (φ21 × H5 cm) ¥27,500 / Tray S (φ19 cm) ¥9,900 / Tray S (φ17 cm) ¥9,900 / Tray L (φ30 × H15 cm) ¥38,500

"Pearl Journey vol.02 / AMAKUSA" features a special collaboration with designer and artist Sae Honda.

Honda focused on the Akoya oyster, the mother shell that raises Akoya pearls. After producing a pearl, the shell finishes its role, and Honda used these shells as a glaze for porcelain made from Amakusa pottery stone, creating works that give them new value. The result is a set of unique pieces inspired by the character of baroque pearls and by Amakusa's climate, nature, and culture.

By linking the memories held by each material, pearls, shells, and pottery stone, the collaboration explores new expressions that could only emerge from this land.
