SOS Exhibition Celebrates 20 Years of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in Osaka

The "SOS Exhibition: The Haruhi Suzumiya Exhibition That Excited the World," marking the 20th anniversary of the TV anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, opens at ラクバスホール on the 3rd floor of Abeno and in Osaka on November 21 (Saturday).

Following its run in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district in August 2026, the exhibition now heads to Osaka, giving fans across the Kansai region a chance to step into the world of the 20th-anniversary anime.

The exhibition is presented in two parts: "Memories of Haruhi Suzumiya," which retraces the story through rare production materials and photo spots such as a recreation of the SOS Brigade's clubroom, and "The Haruhi Phenomenon," which explores the many ways the series has shaped contemporary culture. Together, the two sections let visitors experience the "Haruhi Phenomenon" the show has generated over 20 years.

Experience the "Haruhi Phenomenon" in Osaka

Since its TV debut in 2006, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has captivated fans with its inventive, non-chronological storytelling, memorable characters, and striking music and visuals.

The exhibition looks back on the series through valuable production materials that colored the show, along with photo spots such as a recreation of the SOS Brigade's clubroom.

The "Haruhi Phenomenon" section, meanwhile, takes a multi-angle look at how the series has influenced contemporary culture well beyond anime and light novels, including its impact on the internet.

Twenty years on, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya continues to draw fans, and the exhibition offers a chance to experience both the appeal of the series and the "Haruhi Phenomenon" that came to symbolize its era.

About The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

The "Haruhi Suzumiya" series is a light novel series written by Nagaru Tanigawa with illustrations by Noizi Ito, published under Kadokawa's Sneaker Bunko imprint. It follows the sci-fi-tinged school stories of the unofficial school club "SOS Brigade," led by its chief, Haruhi Suzumiya.

The 2006 TV anime adaptation, with its story told out of chronological order and the dance for its ending theme "Hare Hare Yukai," became an explosive hit through the internet and grew into a wider social phenomenon.
