A puzzle cafe with a quirky premise — you can't leave until you solve the mystery — has opened its latest location in Osaka Namba. Hatena Coffee Shop (はてな珈琲店), operated by experiential entertainment company Experiful, opened its Osaka Namba branch on June 1, 2026.
What Is Hatena Coffee Shop?
Hatena Coffee Shop is a laid-back puzzle cafe where guests can enjoy mystery-solving with a drink in hand. Unlike typical escape room experiences, there is no time limit — visitors solve puzzles at their own pace. No reservations are required, and the cafe welcomes solo visitors and groups alike.
The catch: once you enter, you can't leave until you've cracked the mystery. Take your time, order a drink, and work through to the one and only solution.
All puzzles are original creations by Experiful, designed to be approachable yet satisfying. Guests can expect locked treasure chests, unusual props, and cleverly rigged items — each offering a different kind of trick to keep solvers on their toes.
Buzz Before Opening
When the first Hatena Coffee Shop opened at Yokohama Station, the announcement post on X (formerly Twitter) was itself a puzzle — and it generated around 100,000 impressions within a single day.
The Osaka Namba Location
The Osaka Namba branch is the sixth in the chain, and incorporates lessons learned from previous locations. It features a solo-dedicated seating area known as the "Puzzle Focus Counter," as well as two-person and four-person table seats for couples, friend groups, and families.
Located just off Dotonbori, the cafe makes for a natural stop between sightseeing spots in Namba.
