IKEA Japan (Headquarters: Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture; President & Chief Sustainability Officer: Petra Färe), the Japanese branch of the Swedish home furnishing company with the vision "to create a better everyday life for the many people," will launch the OMMJÄNGE collection starting January 8, 2026, at IKEA stores nationwide and the IKEA online store. This collection reinterprets Swedish folklore (folk culture and customs) for contemporary lifestyles.
Design Inspired by 1800s Swedish Rural Life
The design of the OMMJÄNGE collection began with a deep exploration of rural Swedish life in the 1800s, focusing on "rediscovering the beauty of traditional design." Life in Swedish rural areas during that era took place entirely within a single room space – sleeping, eating, spending time with others, and working all happened in one area. In compact cabins with scarce resources, every item needed to serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. This new collection of 20 products pays homage to these folkloric traditions while recognizing that modern living in small spaces shares similar needs for flexible, multi-purpose solutions, aiming to bridge contemporary needs with forgotten traditions.
The collection features a cabinet inspired by decorative small liquor cabinets that remains visually striking whether its painted doors are open or closed, baskets woven from poplar wood inspired by the ancient craft of weaving birch bark "näve" into baskets and boxes, and a teardrop-shaped tray designed after the traditional Swedish "svepask" small box made by bending wood.
Maria Vinka, Product Design Developer at IKEA of Sweden, commented:
"With the OMMJÄNGE collection, we wanted to challenge the notion that folklore is outdated. Folk art remains inspiring and relevant today, and we wanted to prove that we can create something interesting and inspiring while respecting our Swedish traditional roots, which have rich and expressive connections to the present day."
