Moomin Arabia, the Finnish lifestyle brand operated by Fiskars Japan Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), will release a limited collection called Winternight Glow on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The designs are based on Tove Jansson's original artwork for Moominland Midwinter, held by the Moomin Museum in Tampere, Finland.
The collection was created to coincide with "Moomin Mug Mania," an exhibition at the Moomin Museum in Tampere themed around Moomin Arabia mugs.
The design is based on original artwork drawn for the cover of the 1972 French edition of Moominland Midwinter. It brings together Moomin, the Groke, Too-Ticky, and other figures from the story in a single winter landscape.
In Japan, the collection comes in two items: a 0.3L mug and a set of two mini plates. Rendered in calm colors, they express the winter world of Moominvalley as drawn by Tove Jansson and are designed to blend naturally into everyday life.
A Special Collection Born from the Moomin Museum Collaboration, Roughly 10 Years On
The Moomin Museum in Tampere, Finland, is the world's only museum themed on the Moomin world created by Tove Jansson. It is an interactive museum that invites visitors of all ages on an imaginary journey to Moominvalley.
The museum opened in 1987 and moved to its current building in 2017. To mark the move, the Moomin Valley mug was released, depicting a summer scene of Moominvalley based on Tove Jansson's original artwork held by the museum.
Roughly 10 years after the Moomin Valley mug's debut, Winternight Glow joins as its winter counterpart in 2026. Together, the summer Moomin Valley and the winter Winternight Glow let fans enjoy Moominvalley in two different seasons.
The Moomin Museum will also hold its Moomin mug-themed exhibition "Moomin Mug Mania" from September 26, 2026. The original Tove Jansson artwork that inspired Winternight Glow will be on display for one month from the opening.
Winternight Glow, Based on Original Artwork from Moominland Midwinter
The Winternight Glow design is based on original artwork that Tove Jansson painted in gouache for the cover of the 1972 French edition of Moominland Midwinter.
When her works were translated in different countries, Tove Jansson sometimes created new illustrations for each edition, and this piece was born as one of them.
Moominland Midwinter, first published in 1957, tells the story of Moomin, who wakes up alone in the middle of hibernation and experiences the winter world and its wonders for the first time. While his family sleeps on, he meets winter nature and creatures he never knew before. Feeling loneliness, anxiety, and sometimes fear, he grows by facing himself and the new world around him.
The artwork combines several scenes from the story into a single picture.
Mysterious creatures light a fire to drive away the cold and darkness. The Groke quietly appears, drawn by the light and warmth of Moomin's oil lamp. Too-Ticky enjoys the winter while fishing. These memorable scenes from Moominland Midwinter unfold within one illustration.
Moomin Arabia senior illustrator Parvati Pillai designed Winternight Glow. She adjusted Tove Jansson's original artwork to fit the shape of the mug and made slight changes to the color saturation, keeping the design as faithful to the original as possible.
The base also carries a special back stamp made for Winternight Glow, a detail unique to this collection.

The moment I first saw this piece by Tove Jansson at the Moomin Museum, I was captivated.
The Groke is one of my favorite characters, and this illustration portrays her story very beautifully. Moomin and the other characters look a little nervous, but thanks to Tove Jansson's wonderful touch, the scene never feels frightening.
There are not many illustrations featuring the Groke, so in that sense, this piece is especially special.
