Nemophila Frost Cover Removal Starts at Hitachi Seaside Park

At Hitachi Seaside Park's Miharashi Hill, the removal of frost protection sheets began on February 10th, 2026. The work is currently about 40% complete and is scheduled to finish on February 26th. The white sheets that protected the Nemophila plants from the cold winter weather during germination and root development are being removed, revealing the growing plants beneath. This transformation marks a sign of spring and builds anticipation for the hill to be covered in a blanket of blue.

Sheet removal work in progress

The sheet removal covers approximately 4.2 hectares of Miharashi Hill, requiring about 70 people over approximately 10 working days. The frost protection sheets have high heat and moisture retention properties and also promote growth. Therefore, removal prioritizes areas where the plants have grown larger. The work progresses in stages while observing the Nemophila growth conditions to ensure the entire hill blooms beautifully in spring.

Small Leaves Signal the Arrival of Spring

As the frost protection sheets are removed and the young Nemophila leaves spread out, Miharashi Hill gradually changes to green. Spring preparations begin in earnest, with workers carefully removing weeds by hand alongside the sheet removal to avoid interfering with Nemophila growth. The plants are still small, but expectations grow for their development and the arrival of spring.
