SABUROMARU Distillery, operated by Wakatsuru Sake Brewery in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, has launched a new collaboration whisky with Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, a historical simulation game developed by KOEI TECMO GAMES.
Following the well-received first release in March 2025, which featured generals from the game on its labels, the series has expanded to include additional characters. After Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, the latest bottling features Sun Shangxiang on the label.
The series is planned to include five releases in total, with further generals to be announced in upcoming installments.

About Sun Shangxiang
Sun Shangxiang is the sister of Sun Quan and wife of Liu Bei. Known for her strong character and martial prowess, she is also called the "Bow-waist Princess." Though their marriage was arranged as a political ploy, she grew fond of Liu Bei and chose to be his bride of her own accord. This cask is described as one that holds both brilliance and quiet resolve.
About Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake with Power-Up Kit
This title is the Power-Up Kit version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, the first large-scale remake in the long-running series. Released on January 29, 2026, it was developed to mark the series' 40th anniversary.
The game features a "Jewel" system that allows for varied general development depending on rank — including ruler, viceroy, governor, strategist, general, chieftain, and wanderer — along with "Turning Points" that dramatically shift the balance of power between factions as time passes and events unfold. Additional content includes new "Gifted Talents," new events, council and city commands, five additional hypothetical scenarios, in-game editing, and Chinese voice acting.

About SABUROMARU Distillery
SABUROMARU Distillery is part of Wakatsuru Sake Brewery in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture. Whisky production began there in 1952, during a period when rice shortages made sake brewing difficult. The facility was renovated into a visitor-accessible distillery in 2017 using crowdfunding.
The distillery has been producing notably smoky whisky for over 70 years, which is relatively rare among Japanese distilleries. It currently uses malt smoked with peat from the Isle of Islay in Scotland to create whiskies with deep smokiness and flavor complexity. In 2019, it developed, introduced, and patented ZEMON, the world's first cast iron pot still, drawing international attention.
