The Shibuya River Street (渋谷リバーストリート) promenade — the pedestrian walkway connecting Shibuya Stream to Shibuya Bridge — is receiving its first illumination renewal in three years. The new installation launches on April 1, 2026, under the concept "SHIBUYA FLOWSCAPE."
The promenade was created in 2018 when Shibuya Stream opened, making use of the former Toyoko Line rail corridor that was freed up after the tracks were moved underground. At the same time, the Shibuya River was opened to the sky as part of a public-private partnership to restore it as a clear waterway.
SHIBUYA FLOWSCAPE: Light That Mirrors Nature
The new concept, "SHIBUYA FLOWSCAPE," aims to make the natural rhythms of the urban environment visible through light — visualizing the movement of water in the Shibuya River, the breeze along the riverbank, and the shifting of seasons. Softly swaying lines of light and shimmering reflections evoking the river surface are arranged along the promenade, creating a luminous landscape that accompanies visitors as they walk.

Plant-Powered Lighting
Part of the new installation incorporates "botanical light," a plant-based electricity generation technology. Energy produced by the interaction between plants and soil microorganisms in the riverside greenery powers lights that emit a delicate, living quality — bringing a sense of nature's breath to the urban space without requiring an external power source.
Air-Responsive Lighting
In certain areas, uplighting on the trees responds to the surrounding air conditions — including temperature, humidity, and wind — translating those changes into gradations of color and gentle undulations of light. As a result, the air and wind that visitors actually feel while walking the promenade is mirrored in the light around them, creating an intuitive sense of connection between the natural environment and the city.

Because the lighting shifts with the time of day and season, each visit offers a different experience, and the riverside space takes on a character after dark that is entirely distinct from its daytime appearance.
