About the 78th Annual Exhibition of Shōsō-in Treasures
The exhibition opens the treasures of the Shōsō-in to the public each autumn, when the imperial seal on the repository is lifted. The first exhibition was held in 1946 at the Nara Imperial Museum (now Nara National Museum). Apart from three editions held in Tokyo (1949, 1959, and 1981), it has been held in Nara every year, and this year marks its 80th anniversary.
This year's selection includes items cherished by Emperor Shōmu, such as the go stones "紅牙撥鏤碁子" and "紺牙撥鏤碁子" (北倉25), which show a refined sense of beauty fitting for objects kept close to the emperor. The ewer "漆胡瓶" (北倉43) is also a highlight. Based on a water pitcher originating in Persia to the west, it was made using East Asian lacquer techniques, and it is regarded as a symbol of the cultural exchange between East and West at the time.
