About the Wine

The grapes come from a continuous vineyard next to the Komoro Winery named "Le Ciel," which is French for "heaven" or "sky." The three varieties, Shinano Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, were harvested on the same day, pressed together and fermented together, a method known as co-fermentation. The wine focuses on expressing terroir, meaning the climate and character unique to the land.

The appearance is a brilliant, greenish lemon yellow. The color suggests youth and cleanliness, with faint pale gold nuances visible and a sense of quality within the freshness.

Sharp citrus notes reminiscent of grapefruit and lemon come first, followed by a refreshing note like lime peel. Over time, ripe fruit nuances such as white peach and pear appear, layered with delicate herbal and white flower scents, so that a number of aromas unfold richly.

The attack is led by juicy fruit flavor, with the grapefruit juiciness and refreshing lemon acidity tightening the mouth. Toward the mid-palate, a full body slowly expands, and a rounded texture adds depth to the taste. Fine-grained minerality and acidity continue pleasantly through to the aftertaste. The finish is clean, with fruit, acidity and minerality in balance.

The 2025 Growing Season: Grapes Developed Earlier Than Usual

Following 2024, spring 2025 was warm from the start, and budbreak came earlier than usual. There were also temperature swings, and the timing of budbreak varied by variety. A notable feature of the year was how little rain fell.

Every month except May had less rainfall than average. In August in particular, rainfall was less than half the average, at around 50 to 70 mm. Temperatures were also about 2°C above average, making for a very hot and dry season. Even so, the person in charge of cultivation commented that they were able to harvest grapes of satisfactory quality.

Fermenting Three Varieties Together Instead of Making Them Separately and Blending

The defining feature of "Le Ciel" is co-fermentation, in which the three varieties are harvested on the same day and made into wine together. The harvest date is decided by judging the ripeness of the grapes across the whole vineyard. Shinano Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are harvested on the same day, then pressed and fermented together.

Rather than making each variety separately and combining the finished wines, Manns Wine believes that fermenting the varieties together from the grape stage can better express the character unique to the land.

The aim is not a wine with the flavor the winemaker wants to create, but a wine that expresses the land of "Komoro" itself.

The Thinking Behind the Name "Le Ciel" and the Land of Komoro

"Le Ciel" is a French word meaning "heaven" or "sky."

The name comes from the land called "Tenjin," where the vineyard used for this wine is located.

The company-managed vineyard next to the Komoro Winery sits on a gentle south-facing slope at an elevation of 670 to 680 m.
