Pre-orders are now open for the SPACECOOL Parasol Type 2, a radiative cooling umbrella that uses the proprietary SPACECOOL material to dissipate heat into outer space. The umbrella goes on sale on June 11 — known as "Umbrella Day" in Japan — through the SPACECOOL Consumer Products Lab. online shop.
With Japan's summers growing more intense year by year, the Japan Meteorological Agency has forecast that the 2026 summer average temperature will be above normal. A new weather category called "extreme heat day" — defined as a day reaching 40°C or above — has also been formally established, highlighting the increasing importance of heat protection outdoors. The SPACECOOL Parasol Type 2 follows the sellout of the original SPACECOOL Parasol, which was sold at the brand's online shop and at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai World Expo.
Industry-Leading 80% Heat Shielding Rate
The SPACECOOL material used in the parasol fabric achieves both high solar reflectance and high infrared emissivity — up to 95% each. It blocks incoming solar heat while simultaneously radiating absorbed heat outward as infrared radiation toward space. This dual mechanism delivers an 80% heat shielding rate for the silver colorway — performance that the company describes as a practical "S75+" ranking, a level beyond the highest tier currently defined in industry standards. Light-blocking and UV shielding rates also remain at industry-leading levels.
(Note: "S75+" is not an officially defined industry category; SPACECOOL uses it as an indicator to more clearly express the heat shielding performance of the parasol fabric.)
Outdoor and Lab Test Results
Outdoor testing conducted under clear skies in May showed that, when compared using a thermal camera, the SPACECOOL Parasol Type 2 had the lowest fabric surface temperature and the lowest user scalp temperature among the products tested. Scalp temperature was approximately 6°C lower compared to using no umbrella. (Actual perceived temperature varies depending on ambient temperature, humidity, wind conditions, and other environmental factors.)

Independent lab testing by the Kaken Test Center under JIS L 1951 (heat shielding) and JIS L 1925 (UV shielding) standards confirmed a heat shielding rate of 76 to 80%, placing the product at the highest performance tier for parasol fabrics. Light-blocking rated at 99.99% or above, and UV shielding measured between 99.9% and 100%.

Three Colors with Improved Usability
The parasol is available in three color combinations: Silver × Grey, White × Grey, and White × Blue — designs suited to a wide range of users and occasions. Compared to the previous model, the fabric is more supple and flexible. The umbrella also features a curved handle and a button-style fastener for improved everyday usability.

Made in Japan with Repair Support
The SPACECOOL Parasol Type 2 is manufactured in Japan by White Rose Co., Ltd., an established maker holding a Royal Household Agency supplier designation. Individual repair services are available from White Rose's craftspeople, allowing owners to have their umbrella maintained and continue using it long-term.
