Megane Ichiba Launches "One Hundred Million Sunglasses" Initiative to Combat Overlooked Eye UV Risk

Japanese eyewear chain Megane Ichiba (operated by Megane Top Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shizuoka City) unveiled a new social initiative called the "One Hundred Million Sunglasses Plan" at a UV protection business strategy presentation held on June 3, 2026.

A survey conducted by the company in May 2026 revealed that 70.7% of respondents take some form of UV protection measure, yet only 26.1% use sunglasses. While sunscreen, hats, and parasols have become widespread, protection for the eyes remains notably underutilized.

Megane Ichiba is framing this gap as a social health issue, aiming to move sunglasses beyond a fashion accessory and position them as a daily health habit that everyone can adopt.

A New Challenge as the Brand Approaches Its 20th Anniversary

Megane Ichiba, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in October 2026, has built its identity around six values: vision quality, product quality, safety, health, fashion, and technology. To mark the milestone, the brand is pivoting toward a broader mission — not just supporting clear vision, but actively protecting future eye health.

1. Upgraded Product Lineup

UV-blocking coverage on prescription sunglass lenses has been extended to 400nm, and lenses now feature rear-surface UV protection and heat-resistant coating — all without a price increase.

2. Support for Outdoor Workers

A new consultation window is being opened for companies in sectors such as construction, logistics, tourism, security, and agriculture, supporting organizations looking to introduce sunglasses for employees who work outdoors.

3. High School Baseball Federation-Approved Sports Sunglasses

Megane Ichiba will become the first domestic eyewear retailer to release sports sunglasses that meet the regulations of the Japan High School Baseball Federation (公益財団法人日本高等学校野球連盟). The sunglasses are designed with anti-fogging, durability, and UV protection in mind to improve the playing environment for high school baseball players.

4. Eye Care Workshops for Schools

Hands-on workshops on UV radiation and eye health will be held at elementary, middle, and high schools across Japan, aiming to build eye-protection habits among younger generations.

5. UV Protection Campaign for Under-18s

The high-performance "Perfect UV Block" lens will be offered at half price for customers aged 18 and under who have downloaded the Megane Ichiba app.

  • Period: June 4, 2026 (Thu) – August 31, 2026 (Mon)
  • Eligibility: Customers aged 18 and under with the Megane Ichiba app installed

6. Dog Sunglasses "WANGLASS"

Megane Ichiba is also releasing its first-ever sunglasses for dogs. The product features photochromic lenses and frames designed to fit canine bone structure, extending the brand's eye care mission to pets as well.

Ophthalmologist Sounds the Alarm

At the presentation event, ophthalmologist and medical doctor Reiko Arita commented that the number of patients reporting eye discomfort linked to UV exposure has been increasing in recent years, and that sunglasses are becoming an essential item for protecting eye health.

Through the "One Hundred Million Sunglasses Plan," Megane Ichiba aims to build a culture of eye care in Japan — covering children, outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts, and even pets.
