Fifty-five years after their original debut, Masudaya Saito Trading is reviving authentic soft vinyl figures of Spectreman and Enjin Lar, first released in 1971.
Spectreman is a tokusatsu production that aired on Fuji TV from January 2, 1971 to March 25, 1972, spanning 63 episodes total. The series went through several title changes during its run — starting as Space Ape Gori, then Space Ape Gori vs. Spectreman, before becoming Spectreman. Widely regarded as a forerunner of the second kaiju boom of the 1970s, the show left a lasting impression on the children of that era.
The two figures in this revival are Spectreman TYPE-A, as he appeared in episodes 1 and 2, and Enjin Lar (Sky Blue Armor Version), Gori's loyal subordinate and former military officer from Planet E. Data was sourced directly from original pieces to faithfully preserve the scale and atmosphere of the originals.
The figures also reproduce the hand-painted style of the era, giving each piece a slightly individual expression — a hallmark of Showa-era toys — even as mass-produced items. Rather than simply recreating the shape, the revival aims to bring back the full character of the originals: their proportions, scale, and the warmth of handcrafted detail.
In the 1970s, soft vinyl figures gave children a way to hold their favorite TV heroes and monsters in the palm of their hand. This revival offers those familiar with the originals a chance to reconnect with those memories, while introducing a new generation to the distinctive craftsmanship of Showa-era soft vinyl toys.
