San-X Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) has announced that the fifth installment of Sumikkogurashi the Movie will be released in 2027, the year Sumikkogurashi marks its 15th anniversary. A limited re-screening of the series' second film has also been announced as the first 15th anniversary event.
The Sumikkogurashi Movie Series
Somehow, it feels calming to be in a corner. Sumikkogurashi features slightly negative yet distinctive characters who are loved by people of all ages, from children to adults. The cast includes Shirokuma, who dislikes the cold; Penguin?, who lacks confidence; Tonkatsu, who is leftover food (?!); shy Neko; and Tokage, who is hiding their true identity. Many people can find something of themselves in these relatable characters.
In the animated films, the Sumikko characters leave their usual corners and take part in a variety of stories on the big screen. The series began with the first installment, 『Sumikkogurashi the Movie: とびだす絵本とひみつのコ』 (2019), which drew attention as a "story that unexpectedly makes even adults cry." The series has since become a big hit, with a cumulative audience of more than 3.5 million. The fifth installment, which is described as a culmination of the series, has now been confirmed for 2027.
Celebration Illustration by Creator Yuri Yokomizo
Since the first film in 2019, each Sumikko character has taken a turn at the center of the story. In the celebration illustration drawn by creator Yuri Yokomizo, Penguin?, Tokage, Shirokuma, and Tonkatsu each carefully hold a number decorated with motifs from their own stories.
The fifth film brings the turn of the last main character, Neko. True to its shy nature, Neko stands at the front of the illustration with rosy cheeks, as if urged forward by its good friend Zassou. The number "5" that Neko holds is still blank white, leaving open what kind of story the fifth film, a milestone for the series, will tell.
Sumikkogurashi the Movie 5 (working title) is scheduled for a nationwide roadshow in 2027. Further updates are expected.
15th Anniversary Event No. 1: Blue Full Moon Anniversary Screening
The first 15th anniversary event is a re-screening of the second film in the series, 『Sumikkogurashi the Movie: 青い月夜のまほうのコ』 (2021), under the title "Blue Full Moon Anniversary Screening (Five Years Later)."
The event takes its cue from a legend in the film: "On the night of the blue full moon that comes once every five years, wizards visit the town and grant dreams." Five years have passed since the film's release, and the wizards are coming to visit again.
In addition to the re-screening of the film itself, new footage has been produced for this event. Audiences are encouraged to stay in their seats through the end of the credits.
Attendees will also receive a gift. It is a postcard featuring a newly drawn illustration that shows the Sumikko characters and the wizards reunited after five years.
