New "Sea Grape Shaved Ice Zenzai" Pairs Okinawan Zenzai with Fresh Sea Grapes at Uminchi in Itoman

Sea Grape Farm Uminchi (海ぶどう農園 海ん道), a sea grape theme park in Itoman, Okinawa, has added a new dessert to its menu: the "Sea Grape Shaved Ice Zenzai" (海ぶどう氷ぜんざい). The dessert combines sea grapes cultivated at the farm with zenzai, a classic Okinawan sweet, and went on sale in early October 2026 at SHOP Puchipuchi inside the facility.

What Is Okinawan Zenzai?

In Okinawa, "zenzai" does not mean the warm, soup-style sweet familiar on mainland Japan. It refers to a cold dessert made of sweetly simmered kintoki beans (red kidney beans) topped with shaved ice. It is one of the soul foods loved by Okinawans, and some shops in the prefecture serve it all year round. In Okinawa's warm climate, cold sweets are enjoyed regardless of the season.

Uminchi has been proposing menu items that depart from the traditional ways of eating sea grapes, as a way to show new sides of them. Besides the new zenzai, the facility serves a range of sea grape dishes, such as the "Fresh Sea Grape Soft Cream," which lets visitors enjoy the popping texture of sea grapes, and the "Sea Grape Egg-on-Rice," a bowl of rice generously topped with sea grapes and combined with specially selected eggs.

The new "Sea Grape Shaved Ice Zenzai" brings together the zenzai rooted in Okinawan food culture and sea grapes raised on the farm's own grounds. The crunchy shaved ice and the popping sea grapes add texture. The sweetness of the kintoki beans, molasses, and condensed milk is layered with the mild saltiness of the sea grapes, making a dessert that stays enjoyable to the last bite. Made with fresh sea grapes harvested at Uminchi, it can be enjoyed in a setting overlooking the sea in Itoman, Okinawa.
