Chiyoda Cherry Blossom Festival - Tokyo's Historic Cherry Blossom Festival

Cherry Blossom (sakura / hanami)
Tokyo / March

About This Event

This is a spring cherry blossom festival held throughout various locations in Chiyoda Ward, including the Chidorigafuchi Green Path west of the Imperial Palace, Yasukuni Shrine, and Kitanomaru Park. Started in 1954, this historic cherry blossom festival is one of Tokyo's most famous sakura viewing spots, attracting approximately one million hanami visitors. The main attraction, Chidorigafuchi Green Path, features about 230 Somei Yoshino and Oshima cherry trees planted along a 700-meter stretch, creating a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel that gracefully celebrates the arrival of spring. The festival's highlight is the nighttime illumination of the cherry blossoms, where LED lighting and environmentally conscious staging create a fantastical night sakura experience. During the cherry blossom viewing period, Chidorigafuchi Boat Rental extends its operating hours into the evening, providing a special experience where visitors can enjoy the cherry blossom canopy from the water and the beautiful reflection of flower petals on the water surface. Additionally, at Yasukuni Shrine, where the "standard tree" used as the criterion for Tokyo's cherry blossom bloom declaration is located, special night viewing events are also held, making it beloved as the center of Tokyo's cherry blossom culture. Within walking distance, multiple cherry blossom viewing spots such as the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and the outer moat parks are scattered throughout the area, allowing visitors to enjoy diverse cherry blossom landscapes while strolling around - a unique charm that only Chiyoda can offer.
