About This Event

The Hakata Dontaku Festival is one of Japan's largest citizen-participation festivals held annually during Golden Week in Fukuoka City. With roots tracing back to the traditional Hakata event "Hakata Matsubayashi" that began in 1179, it boasts over 840 years of history. The festival's name "Dontaku" derives from the Dutch word "Zondag," meaning holiday, reflecting the history of international cultural exchange. The festival's greatest appeal lies in its diverse programs that blend tradition with modernity. It begins with the solemn "Hakata Matsubayashi," where three deities ride on horseback through the streets, followed by vibrant parades featuring corporations, schools, and local groups that color Meiji-dori from Hakata to Tenjin. Performance stages are set up throughout the city where visitors can enjoy taiko drumming, dancing, and local entertainment "Hakata Niwaka" all day long. A unique feature is that spectators can participate by beating "shamoji" (rice paddles) along with the performances. On the final day, the "So-odori" (Grand Dance) allows anyone to join in spontaneously, creating a unified celebration where everyone comes together to enliven the festival. In the open atmosphere where the entire city of Fukuoka becomes the venue, visitors can experience Japan's traditional culture and the passionate energy of its citizens firsthand, making it a truly special experience.
