About This Event

Kairakuen Garden in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's three most famous gardens, created in 1842 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the 9th lord of the Mito domain, under the philosophy of "enjoying together with the people." The garden features over 3,000 plum trees of more than 100 varieties, making it a beloved symbol of early spring for centuries. The annual Mito Ume Matsuri showcases white plums, red plums, and weeping plums in diverse varieties that bloom in succession, allowing visitors to enjoy plum viewing over an extended period. The historic Kobuntei pavilion, designed by Nariaki himself, stands within the garden as a renowned scenic spot offering panoramic views of the plum groves. During the festival period, various events are held including outdoor tea ceremonies, traditional performing arts concerts, evening illuminations, and sales of local plum-based specialty products, providing visitors with a precious opportunity to experience Japan's early spring culture.
