Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival - Tokyo's Historic Hanami Spot

Cherry Blossom (sakura / hanami)
Tokyo / March

About This Event

The Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival is one of Tokyo's most historic cherry blossom spots, held annually in spring at Sumida Park. The Sumida Park Sakura Matsuri is held on the Taito ward side, while the Bokutei Sakura Matsuri is held on the opposite Sumida ward side every spring. This park spans both Taito and Sumida wards, with approximately 900 cherry blossom trees planted along a 1-kilometer stretch, making it one of Tokyo's premier hanami locations, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites. The festival's greatest charm lies in its unique scenery where Edo-period atmosphere harmoniously blends with modern urban landscapes. Behind the cherry blossom trees blooming along the Sumida River stands Tokyo Skytree, the world's tallest self-standing broadcasting tower, creating a beautiful contrast between old and new. At night, the illuminated cherry blossoms and Skytree's lighting reflect on the river's surface, creating an enchanting nighttime hanami wonderland. During the festival period, distinctive events are held on both the Taito and Sumida ward sides. Local neighborhood association food stalls offer takoyaki, motsuni (stewed offal), and dango dumplings for visitors to enjoy. The special highlight is the Mukojima Geisha Tea House, where visitors can enjoy a unique experience with real geiko and tea and traditional sweets. Music and performance stage events are also held, providing visitors with opportunities to experience traditional Japanese culture. One of Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival's special ways to enjoy the season is cherry blossom viewing from the water. Sumida River Line water buses and yakatabune pleasure boats operate during the festival period, offering luxurious cruise experiences to view cherry blossoms on both riverbanks and Tokyo Skytree from the water. The cherry blossom corridor stretching from Azuma Bridge to Sakura Bridge and the scenic views from the beautiful X-shaped Sakura Bridge are beloved photography spots for many tourists. The convenient location, just a 5-minute walk from Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Shopping Street, is another major attraction. By combining a visit with Asakusa sightseeing, visitors can fully enjoy Edo history, culture, and spring atmosphere all in one day. The Sumida River Terrace and River Walk are also well-maintained, allowing anyone to safely and comfortably stroll along the cherry blossom trees. Experience Japan's traditional spring festival to your heart's content in the special scenery created by three elements: cherry blossom trees, Edo culture, and Tokyo Skytree.
