Tokyo Comic Con - Technology and Pop Culture Festival
About This Event
Comic conventions, commonly known as "comic cons," are pop culture events that originated in the United States. In Japan, Tokyo Comic Con has been held since 2016, and Osaka Comic Con since 2023, attracting thousands of fans each year.
Tokyo Comic Con was first held at Makuhari Messe in December 2016 as a sister event to Silicon Valley Comic Con, following a proposal by Steve Wozniak (Apple co-founder) and with the cooperation of Stan Lee (legendary Marvel Comics editor). Since then, it has taken place annually at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture every December.
The event is known for welcoming numerous Hollywood movie stars to Japan, with photo sessions and autograph signings arranged for fans. Past guests have included an impressive lineup of actors such as Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Orlando Bloom, and many others.
The venue features extensive exhibits, including actual props and sets used in films, costumes, large-scale models and replicas, interactive experiences using cutting-edge technology, and original artwork for sale in the Artist Alley.
Tokyo Comic Con is also a major cosplay event. Dedicated changing rooms and cloakrooms are available for cosplay participants, welcoming everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans. The annual cosplay contest showcases creatively crafted costumes and performances that captivate audiences. Another highlight is the spectacular sight of characters from American comics, movies, Japanese anime, and games all gathered in one place.
To attend Tokyo Comic Con, visitors must purchase admission tickets. Separate tickets are required for cosplay participation as well as for photo and autograph sessions with celebrity guests. Tickets should be purchased in advance to ensure entry and participation.
