About This Event

The Tokyo Marathon is an international marathon held in Tokyo, Japan's capital city. Since its inaugural event in 2007, it has continuously developed as an international competition featuring runners from around the world. In 2013, it became a member of the World Marathon Majors alongside Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York (known as Abbott World Marathon Majors from 2015 onwards). The greatest characteristic of this marathon is the ability to experience "Tokyo's past, present, and future" condensed into the 42.195-kilometer course. From the starting point at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to the finish at Tokyo Station, runners traverse through Sensoji Temple's Kaminarimon Gate with its Edo-period charm, the iconic Ginza main street representing modern Japan, and futuristic skyscrapers. This diverse landscape tells the story of Tokyo's centuries-long accumulation of history and culture, making it more than just a sporting event—it becomes a cultural experience for participants. Annually, approximately 1-2 million spectators gather along the route to warmly welcome runners from about 100 countries and regions. Social contribution activities are also an important characteristic of the Tokyo Marathon. Since 2011, the ongoing charity program allows participants to choose their own donation destinations, and through this system, donations totaling over 5.8 billion yen have been collected to date. During the event period, the "Tokyo Marathon EXPO," Japan's largest running trade show, is held, bringing together running gear and sports technology from countries around the world. In recent years, initiatives emphasizing diversity have been promoted, including LGBTQ+ support and the establishment of barrier-free viewing areas, creating an environment where everyone can participate easily. The Tokyo Marathon serves not just as a sporting event, but also as a cultural platform that communicates the values of diversity and inclusivity of modern Tokyo to the world.
