About Sandhill Rakkyo
Rakkyo cultivated in the sandy soil of Tottori Sand Dunes is called "Sandhill Rakkyo." The sandy soil of the dunes has no water retention capacity. Under the field, layers of sand continue for tens of meters, and no matter how much fertilizer is applied, it flows away with the rain. Furthermore, the harsh wind and snow from the Sea of Japan in winter creates an environment with large temperature differences. Because of this harsh land, rakkyo grows slowly, and each layer overlaps to create a crispy texture. Also, in soils with low fertility like the dunes, the color tends to become white, and this dazzling "fair complexion" is also the charm of sandhill rakkyo.
