What are you going to introduce to us today?

Jason Bian

Today, I will do my best to convey the charm of "Higashi-Shinjuku"!

He set up the meeting place at the McDonald's near Higashi-Shinjuku Station. In fact, this was the first shop Jason visited on the day he arrived in Japan!

Jason Bian

Just coming here makes me feel nostalgic. The exterior was under construction today though...

By the way, what memories do you have of "Higashi-Shinjuku" that you are going to share with us today?

Jason Bian

I actually lived in Higashi-Shinjuku for two years after I came to Japan. It is a very pleasant place, peaceful and green, even though it is just a few minutes away from Kabukicho, Shinjuku. This kind of residential area just a few minutes away from downtown is one of my personal favorite things about Japan. It's not that there is a lot of things to do in Higashi-Shinjuku, but it is a really nice place, so I'll introduce it to you today!

So Jason and I started our walk in Higashi-Shinjuku.

The area near our meeting place:

This is the site of an office building, but with lots of greenery, it is a favorite place to walk or take a break.

A nice space for sure! There were all kinds of people walking with their dogs, taking a break with a cup of coffee, etc.

ーーーー

After passing through the office building site, the next thing that came into view was the torii gate of the shrine.

I used to walk past this shrine every day because the house I lived in at the time was just beyond this shrine. There is a park next to this shrine, and I like that the shrine is a part of local people's lives. I also particularly like the path with the stairs next to the shrine, which is the place I wanted to introduce the most.

ーーーー

So here we are...! This is indeed a nice pathway.

Hey, isn't it nice? This road perfectly captures the essence of Japan, with scenery that looks like something out of a Ghibli or Makoto Shinkai anime. When I was looking for a house, I found this place and immediately decided to live here.

Indeed, this is a scenery that even Japanese people might get excited about. It seems like places like this are very common, but they are actually quite rare.

Furthermore, let's go to another reason why I love this place!

Continue to take walks a little longer:

Other than the place Jason has introduced, there are many places with a nice atmosphere. The main street where the exit of Higashi-Shinjuku Station is located is lined with buildings, but once you enter the back streets, you will find yourself in a residential area with a really calm atmosphere. As I was walking toward Shinjuku Station, thinking that I might forget I was in the Shinjuku area, I soon arrived at Kabukicho, the entertainment district.

Jason Bian

That's right. When I was living here, I always had dinner and other things around here before going home.

So this is a living area too.

Jason Bian

Completely yes!

I have been loving Japanese subculture, such as video games and anime, since I was a child, and I have always wanted to visit Japan someday. Japan is a country with many faces, where such works as "My Neighbor Totoro" are set in a tranquil countryside, "Chibi Maruko-chan" in a provincial city full of humanity, and "City Hunter" in a big city full of desire. I really, really love Higashi-Shinjuku, which has both a tranquil atmosphere like in anime and the vibrant energy of a big city in everyday life. I am thrilled to be able to introduce it to you this time!

It was fun to learn about a part of Tokyo that I didn't even know! Thank you very much!

Bonus

Jason is a photo tour guide specialist. Since we were in Kabukicho, a popular photo spot for international travelers, we asked Jason to take some photos!

*Jason's camera and advice result in great photos!

Finally... I heard that most people choose Kabukicho for their photoshoot location in Shinjuku, but Jason has other recommendations for places to visit. I'll include those photos as well for extra reference :)
