This summer, Akame 48 Falls in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture, is adding a new seasonal touch to its gorge: about 2,000 wind chimes strung along the walking trail between the entrance and Fudo Falls, roughly a 5-minute walk. The event, "Suddenly, 2,000 Wind Chimes Are Lined Up," runs from Saturday, July 11 through Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

A Waterfall Gorge Known for Summer Coolness
Akame 48 Falls draws around 50,000 visitors during the July-to-September summer season, thanks to the natural coolness of its gorge and waterfalls — many visitors say it genuinely feels cooler here, and the spot is popular as a summer retreat. With recent summers bringing record-breaking heat, the gorge wanted to make the experience feel even cooler, leading to this wind chime installation. Adding a visual sense of coolness to a location already known for its refreshing atmosphere is meant to double the cooling effect for visitors.

Accessible for a Wide Range of Visitors
The walking trail has handrails on its stairs, and free wheelchair rental is available for the section leading to Fudo Falls, so the path is manageable for young children and older visitors alike. Since the wind chimes are set up along the entire stretch from the entrance to Fudo Falls, even visitors who aren't confident walking longer distances can enjoy them. The combination of wind chimes echoing through the gorge and the powerful waterfalls makes for a striking summer photo spot, whether visiting solo, with family, or with friends.
