The open-air terrace dining overlooking the flowing Kamo River is one of Kyoto's most beloved summer traditions, and the venue is preparing an enhanced experience for the 2026 season.

About Kawayuka at Funatsuru

Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort operates within a five-story tower building that stands as a registered tangible cultural property of Japan, with over 100 years of history. The venue traces its roots to a traditional ryotei (Japanese restaurant inn) founded in the third year of Meiji (1870), which relocated to its current location in Taisho 14 (1925).

From May 1 through October 15, the restaurant adds kawayuka seating alongside the Kamo River — one of the largest such terraces along the riverbank, drawing approximately 15,000 visitors each summer. The terrace is designed with generous spacing between seats, allowing guests to enjoy the views at a relaxed pace.

For July and August, the venue plans a flexible arrangement where the main courses are served in the cool indoor dining room, with dessert enjoyed on the riverside terrace. Details on exact hours and service specifics will be announced separately.

Kawayuka dining atmosphere

The menu changes three times throughout the season — May to June, July to August, and September to October — to reflect the seasonal ingredients of each period. Kyoto summer staples such as hamo (pike conger eel) and local Kyoto vegetables are incorporated into a Kyoto French style.
