Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto Hosts "Tanzania Fair in Kyoto '26" Starting May 15

Hotel Nikko Princess Kyoto, located in Shimogyo-ku near Shijo Karasuma, is holding the "Tanzania Fair in Kyoto '26" from May 15 to June 7, 2026. The annual event offers visitors a chance to experience Tanzanian food culture and art through specially crafted cuisine, cocktails, and a Tingatinga painting exhibition.

Tanzanian Menu at Café & Dining Amber Court

During the fair, Café & Dining Amber Court (1F) will serve à la carte dishes inspired by Tanzania's diverse food culture. The menu features three spice-infused dishes:

  • Mishikaki (Beef Skewers) and Chipsi Mayai (French Fry Omelette) Salad – ¥2,500
  • Supu ya Pweza (Octopus Soup with Lime) – ¥1,600
  • Chicken Grill with Chickpea Ragù and Tanzania-Style Pilaf – ¥3,200

Guests who order from the Tanzanian menu will receive a complimentary napkin made from kanga or kitenge, traditional Tanzanian fabrics.

For takeout, the special cake "Asante" (¥700) is available from May 18. Made with cacao and coffee sourced from Tanzania, it features a rich chocolate mousse with a coffee brûlée center, set in an almond tart shell. The name means "thank you" in Swahili.

Tanzanian Cocktails at Main Bar Darley

Main Bar Darley (2F) offers two Tanzania-inspired cocktails during the fair:

  • "Stone Town" (¥1,800) – Inspired by the stone architecture of Zanzibar's World Heritage site Stone Town, this cocktail blends banana liqueur and yogurt liqueur with a lingering hint of nutmeg.
  • "Amani" (Non-alcoholic, ¥1,500) – A non-alcoholic take on the Tanzanian "Dawa" cocktail, blended with yuzu tea for a Japanese touch. The sweetness of yuzu and tartness of lime make for a refreshing sip.

Tingatinga Painting Exhibition in the Lobby

The hotel lobby (1F) will feature an exhibition and sale of Tingatinga paintings and original goods throughout the fair, organized in cooperation with Gallery Tanzania Filia. Tingatinga is a painting style that originated in Tanzania in the late 1960s, known for bold depictions of savanna animals, nature, and everyday life in vivid colors — one of Africa's representative forms of modern art.

Original goods including bandana handkerchiefs, T-shirts, tote bags, postcards, and jigsaw puzzles will also be on sale.
