Japan's manga magazines began as a vehicle for political satire. Through the "Ponchi" magazine culture and the work of artists such as Ippei Okamoto, they grew into a form of mass culture, weathering an era of press censorship on the way to the manga we know today. A new book, "Japanese Manga Magazines: From the Late Edo Period to the Immediate Postwar Period — YUMOTO Koichi Collection," traces this lineage of manga magazines through numerous illustrations and materials drawn from a rare collection.
The book is presented bilingually, in both Japanese and English.

The book will go on advance sale at the special exhibition "Open the Treasure Box of Mononoke! Scary and Cute, Yokai Gather from Miyoshi and Okazaki!," running from Saturday, August 1 through Monday, October 12, 2026, at Okazaki Castle and the Mikawa Bushi no Yakata Ieyasu-kan (Kosei-cho, Okazaki). On September 7, 2026, part of the display at the Ieyasu-kan will be changed.
