A Tranquil Kamakura Temple with a Seasonal Photo Spot
Kakuonji Temple (覚園寺), nestled in the quiet Nikaido neighborhood of Kamakura, is setting up a special photo spot as part of the Kanagawa/Yokohama Destination Campaign pre-campaign period. Visitors can discover a display of illuminated traditional Japanese wagasa (paper umbrellas) known as the "Happy Rain Umbrella" (幸せの雨傘).

Kakuonji has deep historical roots: it was originally established in 1218 as the Okura Yakushido, a hall dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), founded through the faith of Hojo Yoshitoki. In 1296, Hojo Sadatoki expanded it into a full temple—named "Kakuonji"—as a place of study for the four Buddhist traditions of Shingon, Tendai, Zen, and Jodo.
Exploring the Temple Grounds

Hidden at the end of a quiet residential lane, the temple grounds consist of five structures. Walking along the main path bordered by lush greenery, visitors reach the Yakushido (Yakushi Hall), which houses numerous Buddhist statues. The ceiling above features a painting of a dragon, preserving the atmosphere of the hall's reconstruction in 1354.

The wagasa photo spot is set within this historically rich and naturally beautiful setting, capturing the quintessentially Kamakura atmosphere of the temple.
Umbrella Fortune Slips and Special Exhibitions

Alongside the photo spot, the temple is also offering "umbrella" fortune slips (kasa-mikuji). The concept behind the display is an invitation to visit whenever you feel unsettled and to leave with a more positive, uplifted spirit.
During the DC campaign period, the temple is also displaying its statue of the young Shakyamuni Buddha through April 30. Normally only shown on April 8th (the Buddha's birthday), this small statue is enshrined in a flower-decorated hall where visitors can pour sweet tea (amazake) over it as an act of worship.

Additionally, the nationally designated Important Cultural Property "Kaisanto" (the mausoleum of the first head priest) will be specially open to the public for about one week from April 27, as is customary each year.
