About Kobito Zukan

"Kobito Zukan" is a series of picture books and related titles by Toshitaka Nabata, first published in 2006. It turns 20 in 2026 and has passed 3.2 million copies in total circulation.

In the first picture book, the main character "Boku" (ぼく) discovers a mysterious creature that is neither an insect nor a plant. These creatures are called "Kobito" (コビト), and 444 types have been introduced so far. Their visuals can be startling at first glance, but the series has become a standard read at kindergartens, nursery schools and elementary schools. It is loved mainly by children, and their families, who sincerely believe Kobito exist.

Following the "how to catch a Kobito" methods introduced in the books and video series, searching for Kobito has become a popular game among children. Whether Kobito really exist is often debated, and it puzzles parents across Japan. If you listen closely and look carefully, you may sense the presence of a Kobito.
