A new mead inspired by Greek mythology is now available at KURAND (クランド), an online craft alcohol shop. "Kami no Mitsushu" (神の蜜酒), meaning "Mead of the Gods," went on sale on July 2, 2026 at 5:00 PM through KURAND's crowdfunding service "Kurafan!"
What Is Kami no Mitsushu?
Kami no Mitsushu was created with the aim of recreating "nectar," the drink of the gods in Greek mythology. Drawing on the history of mead, one of the oldest brewed alcoholic beverages, the drink uses linden honey grown in Hokkaido as its key ingredient. It offers a clean, refreshing taste that can be enjoyed straight or mixed with soda, and a limited-quantity tasting set is also available.

Highlights of Kami no Mitsushu
Recreating the Gods' "Nectar" Through Mead, One of the Oldest Alcoholic Beverages
Kami no Mitsushu recreates mead (honey wine), a drink some mythology researchers have suggested may be the true identity behind "nectar," the drink of the gods. Mead ferments using only honey, water, and yeast, making it one of the oldest brewed alcoholic beverages known. The earliest known evidence comes from roughly 9,000-year-old pottery discovered at the Jiahu archaeological site in China. This product was developed to recreate, in the present day, the prototype of what is considered humanity's oldest alcoholic beverage.

Made From the Nectar of Linden Blossoms, a Tree That Also Appears in Mythology
The key ingredient in Kami no Mitsushu is linden honey produced in Hokkaido. The linden tree appears as a sacred tree in Nordic, Greek, and other mythologies, and can live for as long as 1,000 years. The honey is gathered by bees during the tree's brief summer blooming period of just two to three weeks, drawn from the nectar of its flowers. It carries a floral aroma, a subtle herbal note, and a smooth sweetness, and is finished in a way that preserves honey's natural sweetness.
A Long-Established Fukushima Brewery With Deep Mead Expertise Expresses Honey's Refreshing Sweetness
Kami no Mitsushu was co-developed with Mine no Yuki Shuzojo, a long-established sake brewery in Fukushima Prefecture that was among the first in Japan to brew a wide range of meads and has honed techniques for bringing out the character of honey. Drawing on descriptions found in mythology, the brewers aimed for a dry taste with restrained alcohol content and sugar levels. The result is a light, smooth texture that pairs well with meals, expressing both the crisp refreshment of honey and a lingering sweetness.
