The items were born out of requests to keep enjoying basket bags and mercado bags — pieces strongly associated with summer — even once the weather turns cool. About Letra
Letra is a brand dealing in Mexican goods that debuted in 2014, with the mercado bag as its main product.
In the late 2000s, one of the company's buyers was drawn to the energetic people and colorful streets of Mexico and traveled there several times a year. It was there that they encountered the mercado bag. Sensing the potential of this lightweight, durable bag, the company began importing and selling it in Japan.
From 2014 to today, Letra has gradually grown awareness of the mercado bag within Japan (comparison of units purchased: 1,200 in 2015 versus 35,000 in 2024).
Alongside letting customers enjoy the mercado bag, the company has made it a Social Good goal to contribute — through its business — to passing down traditional Mexican craftsmanship, supporting vocational training in prisons, and helping stabilize the livelihoods of the artisans who make the bags.
