Maestro Dobel Tequila (hereafter Dobel Tequila), a luxury tequila brand from Jalisco, Mexico, is adding its top-tier line, "Dobel 50 Extra Añejo 1972," to its Japanese lineup, with sales starting on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Together with the three products officially released in Japan in June 2026, the lineup now totals four, as the brand moves ahead with a full-scale rollout in Japan. The products are sold by Proximo Japan Co., Ltd. (プロキシモ・ジャパン株式会社) of Shibuya, Tokyo.
History and Production
Dobel Tequila was launched in 2003 by Juan Dobel (フアン・ドーベル), an 11th-generation tequila maker, drawing on more than 250 years of tequila-making knowledge and skill that has been passed down. Its history goes back to 1758, when the family was granted land rights for agave cultivation in the tequila lands of Jalisco, and to 1795, when it obtained a royal permit to produce and sell mezcal wine, the forerunner of tequila.
To this day, the brand uses 100% blue agave grown on a single family-owned estate. Mature plants are hand-selected by jimadors (ヒマドール), the artisans in charge of cultivation and harvest. Harvesting at the point of maturity, when the sugar content is at its highest, contributes to a smooth mouthfeel. The water used in production is drawn from a natural underground aquifer originating from the Tequila volcano.
The Dobel Tequila distillery, owned by the same family and said to be "one of the oldest working distilleries in the world," brings out the flavor of the carefully selected agave by heating it slowly in traditional brick ovens. After yeast fermentation develops its aroma and taste, the spirit is distilled twice in copper pot stills. For barrel aging, the type of barrel and the degree of charring are chosen to suit the desired aroma and flavor, and each product's character is shaped by finishing in different barrels and blending base spirits.
While carrying on this traditional approach to tequila making, the brand combined it with an innovative idea, its own filtration technology, and established the "Cristalino (クリスタリーノ)" category for the first time in the world (see Notes). By pairing the complex, rich flavor that comes from aging with a clear, refined style, it has opened up new possibilities for the tequila category and has been leading its evolution.
New Arrival: A Limited Series of Rare Extra Añejo Tequila
Dobel 50 Extra Añejo 1972 (ドーベル 50 エクストラアネホ 1972) is the newest addition. It is one of a limited series of rare extra añejo tequilas made to celebrate anniversaries and milestones. Along with the three products officially released in Japan in June 2026, it arrives on the Japanese market for the first time as an official product of the top-tier line.
The tequila is a blend of spirits aged in toasted American oak barrels, new American oak barrels charred on the inside, and Bushmills single malt Irish whiskey barrels. Honey-like sweetness, dried-fruit flavors, and complex spice notes unfold on the palate. Aged for a minimum of eight years, this extra añejo is characterized by a silky-smooth mouthfeel. It is made with 100% blue agave grown on a single family-owned estate in the lowlands of Mexico's tequila region, where volcanic soil spreads.
