SBI Art Auction Co., Ltd. will hold a preview exhibition at Hillside Forum in Daikanyama from January 29 (Thursday) to January 31 (Saturday), 2026, ahead of the single-owner collection sale scheduled for March 2026. The preview exhibition will showcase a carefully selected collection of 57 works (planned) from the "Modern Legacy: An Important Japanese Collection of 20th & 21st Century Masters" auction.
About the Preview Exhibition Works
Tsuguharu Foujita's "Portrait of Hélène Franck" is an important portrait painting that demonstrates the maturity of Foujita's art through delicate linework and soft color tones. The unique painting technique represented by the expression of milky white skin quietly tells the story of the artist's experience and sensibility, having traveled between Paris and Japan. "Weiblicher Akt" by Egon Schiele, who represents Austrian art, is a work that approaches the essence of bodily expression through the composition of stripped ornamentation and distorted bodies and smooth lines, evoking the characteristics of early 20th-century expressionism. Edvard Munch's "Madonna (Schiefler 33; Woll 39)" contains conflicting emotions of life and death, sensuality and anxiety, and deeply appeals to the inner feelings of the viewer. This work, which shows Munch's exploration from symbolism to expressionism, leaves a vivid impression that transcends time. Meanwhile, "Seated Cat" depicting a cat, one of the motifs Andy Warhol repeatedly took up, is drawn with soft lines and colors in a relaxed and natural manner, as if reflecting Warhol's own observational eye toward the cats he kept throughout his life.
About the March 2026 Auction
The "Modern Legacy: An Important Japanese Collection of 20th & 21st Century Masters" auction to be held on March 14 (Saturday) is a sale focusing on an important Japanese private collection formed from the 20th to 21st centuries. The collection of works, carefully selected and preserved over a long period of time, is not merely an accumulation of masterpieces, but reflects the collector's aesthetic eye and the spirit of the times.
The following day, March 15 (Sunday), the "Bloom Now" themed sale, representing SBI Art Auction, will be held. This themed sale held in spring has been cherished as a place to introduce diverse expressions in contemporary times. As the title "Bloom Now" indicates, it sheds light on creativity blooming at this very moment, bringing new encounters and discoveries. The March auction, where "Modern Legacy," featuring masterpieces inherited across time, and "Bloom Now," gathering expressions in progress, intersect, will emerge as an unprecedented three-dimensional composition and will be an opportunity to reconsider the history of art and its "present."
