Furniture and interior e-commerce retailer Tansu no Gen (タンスのゲン) has added a new design based on the calico cat to its Mohaya, Neko. (もはや、ねこ。) series, which is developed to recreate the warmth and feel of a real cat.
The series was created so that every cat lover can feel as if they are touching a real cat, reproducing not only the fur pattern and coloring but also the warmth felt when petting one. Since its release in October 2024, it has been featured on social media and in various media outlets, and cumulative sales of the series, including its predecessor model, have passed 38,400 pieces. The new calico cat design, in white, black and orange, was refined through repeated trial and error over the color layout and pattern shapes so that its cat-like look can be felt at a glance.
Beyond Color: Recreating a Cat's Body Warmth
"Warm and fluffy, but they slip away in no time. That whimsical side is cute too, but if we could, we would love to keep touching them forever!" This thought led to the Mohaya, Neko. series. The goal was a blanket that conveys not only the look of a cat, but also the warmth felt when touching one and the kind of fur that makes you want to stroke it.
Cats have a higher body temperature than people, and holding one brings a gentle warmth. To get closer to that feeling, the blanket uses a +3.8°C warming sheet on the back of the base fabric, so that the soft warmth of touching a cat can be felt across the whole fabric.
The texture of the fabric is also carefully considered so that it feels like stroking a real cat.
The fabric is a high-density 340 g/m² material with a generous pile, expressing the fluffy volume of a petted cat. In addition, a heat treatment straightens the crimped fibers, and its timing and number of repetitions are adjusted to make the fur smoother. The aim is a texture that conveys a cat-like feel the moment you touch it, not just in how it looks.
Series Sales Pass 38,400 Pieces
The Mohaya, Neko. series went on sale in October 2024. In addition to blankets, the lineup now extends to pillow covers, cushions, box sheets and lounging mats, so the warmth and feel of a cat can be enjoyed in many parts of daily life.
Related posts on social media have recorded more than 1 million views, and the series has been introduced on TV and web media, including TBS's "Hiruobi" (ひるおび). In 2025, it won an Excellence Award in the Lifestyle category of the "Mail-Order and E-Commerce Hit Product Grand Prix 2025" (通販・ECヒット商品グランプリ2025), organized by Nihon Net Keizai Shimbun (日本ネット経済新聞).
With this response, the series has been chosen by many customers, and cumulative sales, including its predecessor model, have passed 38,400 pieces.
The series has previously offered cat-inspired colors, with Norbeige (ノルベージュ) added in 2025. Now a calico cat (三毛猫) color, in which white, black and orange are intricately mixed, has arrived.
Balancing White, Black and Orange to Recreate the Calico Cat
The Mohaya, Neko. series has so far offered colors inspired by various cats, including Bombay Black, Russian Blue, Persian White, Chatora (チャトラ) and Norbeige. Rather than relying on color alone, the series uses a material that creates fine shading and variation on the fabric surface, expressing fur and coloring reminiscent of a real cat.
The latest addition is the calico cat, expressed in three colors: white, black and orange. With its distinctive mix of three colors, a calico cat is easy to recognize as a cat at a glance. Aiming for a Mohaya, Neko. that makes cats feel even closer, the calico was adopted as a new color.
Unlike the earlier colors, the pattern had to be created by combining three colors, so the developers paid particular attention to the ratio of each color and the shapes of the patterns. Cat-loving employees joined the development, redrawing the design drawings many times while checking whether it really looked like a calico cat, and repeatedly adjusting the color scheme and pattern balance. The result is a new calico cat design that feels even more like a cat.
