“Glass Words”: Naomi Shioya Exhibition at Joyo Historical Archives

An exhibition of glass art by Naomi Shioya is coming to the Joyo Historical Archives Art Spot in Mito City. Running from April 1 to May 30, 2026, the show is free to enter.

Naomi Shioya (originally from Tokyo, currently based in Mito City) creates glass block sculptures inspired by poetry and other written words. This exhibition focuses on her objects made using the “cold cast” technique she learned while studying in France — a glass casting method in which glass fragments are packed into a fireproof plaster mold and fired in a kiln until molten. The distinctive richness of expression this process yields gives the works a sense of warmth that draws viewers in.
