Onsen Town Sweets Fair at Daimaru Umeda — Yufuin, Arima, and Kinugawa Confections Come to Osaka

One of the great pleasures of traveling is tasting locally made sweets crafted with regional ingredients. From June 24 to 30, 2026, Daimaru Umeda is bringing together popular "onsen sweets" from three of Japan's most celebrated hot spring resorts — Yufuin Onsen (Oita Prefecture), Arima Onsen (Hyogo Prefecture), and Kinugawa Onsen (Tochigi Prefecture). Whether you haven't been able to visit a hot spring resort recently or simply want to relive the experience, these sweets offer a taste of that restorative, soothing atmosphere.

Yufuin Onsen: ジャズとようかん — First Osaka Appearance in Four Years

ジャズとようかん is a small shop in Yufuin built around the theme of music. Its signature creation is "ジャズ羊羹" — a yokan (sweet bean jelly) with a hand-crafted piano keyboard pattern on the surface that is often mistaken for a print. The shop owner, who has spent many years in the music industry, created it with the hope of drawing more people toward a love of music.

Sister brand WAX & WANE SHOW makes its first appearance in the Kansai region. The brand partners with Koichi Uehara, a popular French chef who has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for nine consecutive years, offering a craft cheesecake called "少しの沈黙" and authentic canelés called "宵闇."

Made by wagashi (traditional Japanese confectionery) artisans entirely by hand, including the piano keyboard motif, with a theme of pairing well with coffee, wine, and jazz. The classic version uses domestically grown azuki beans and Okinawan black sugar, with wine-soaked dried figs tucked throughout for a visually striking, texturally layered western-style finish.

The limited summer version, ジャズ羊羹 apple&ginger, is a refreshing summer yokan built on a ginger base with a hint of mint, combined with crisp apple pieces and cranberries.

YAMAVICO monaka by ジャズとようかん
YAMAVICO もなか (3-piece set) — ¥1,080 (tax included)

YAMAVICO (やまびこ)

A Western-influenced monaka (wafer confection filled with sweet bean paste), designed to pair with coffee or red wine. The wave pattern on the surface represents both Yufuin's iconic mountain, Yufu-dake, and the "waves of music." The distinctive hexagonal shape draws from the traditional "kikko" (tortoiseshell) pattern, considered auspicious since ancient times.

熟成テリーヌチーズケーキ 少しの沈黙 BLACK PEPPER & WASHED CHEESE features Golden Cenarth, a special washed cheese favored by the British royal family, used generously to create a deeply aromatic cheesecake with a vivid kick of black pepper — a sophisticated, grown-up terrine that goes well beyond simple sweetness.

テリーヌチーズケーキ 少しの沈黙 YUZU adds the brightness of citrus to the cheesecake base. The vivid, fresh yuzu aroma fills the mouth from the first bite, delivering a clean, elegant sweetness with a pleasant acidity.

"宵闇" (yoiyami) refers to the brief darkness that falls after sunset before the moon rises. Arima Onsen: うわなり珈琲 — First Appearance at Daimaru Umeda

うわなり珈琲 is a specialty cheesecake and specialty coffee shop located in the heart of Arima Onsen. Each item is handcrafted using locally sourced ingredients, including house-made cream cheese from local milk and Hyogo Prefecture brand eggs, "Takasago no Yuuhi." Their walk-and-eat cheesecake on a skewer is a standout seller at the Arima Onsen shop, with 40,000 units sold in 2025 alone.

Kinugawa Onsen: ジャージーモウモウ (Aoi no Sho) — First Appearance at Daimaru Umeda

Tochigi Prefecture is the top producer of raw milk on Japan's main island of Honshu. The Nasu highlands in the northern part of the prefecture have a long dairy farming history. Nasu is also a hot spring destination, and it is said that visitors who came for hot spring treatments relaxed while watching livestock, and dairy farmers offered milk — an origin story for today's tourist farm culture in the region.

ジャージーモウモウ is a brand by Kinugawa Onsen confectionery company 葵乃庄 (Aoi no Sho). Their sweets are made with Jersey milk from the Nasu highlands, which is rich in nutrients and particularly creamy. Jersey cows are a small breed that produces less milk, but the raw milk has a fat content of 4.6% or higher — rare among Japan's dairy cattle, making up just 0.8% of the total — and is high in protein as well. The cows are raised on a plant-based feed, which gives the milk a mild, clean flavor with rich creaminess.
