Sumo Experience Venue "Osaka Sumo Heya" Opens in Osaka's Chuo Ward on November 1

A new sumo experience venue for international visitors, "Osaka Sumo Heya" (大阪相撲部屋), opens on November 1 in Chuo Ward, Osaka. It is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 12 of Osaka Metro Sakaisuji-Hommachi Station.

The program lasts about 90 minutes and combines a lecture on the history and culture of sumo, bouts performed by sumo wrestlers, and a participatory segment where visitors can try sumo themselves. The program is offered in English.

The interior is designed around gold and navy blue, creating a space with a Japanese character and an upscale feel.

Mediabound Brings Its Japanese Culture Experiences to Osaka

The venue is run by Mediabound (Mediabound株式会社), which has so far offered Japanese culture experiences, including sumo, mainly in Tokyo and Kyoto. Osaka Sumo Heya is the company's first venue in Osaka.

Rather than simply watching, visitors can learn about and actually try sumo, Japan's traditional sport, through the program. By expanding its Japanese culture experiences to Osaka, the company aims to offer more international visitors an experience unique to Japan.

A 90-Minute Program of Learning, Watching, and Trying Sumo

The roughly 90-minute program lets visitors watch bouts between sumo wrestlers up close.

It starts with a lecture on the history and culture of sumo. After learning about this traditional sport, visitors watch the wrestlers' bouts. Seeing them collide at close range conveys the strength, technique, and atmosphere that are unique to sumo.

A participatory segment also lets visitors take on sumo themselves, and at the end of the experience there is a chance to take commemorative photos with the wrestlers.

Through this sequence of learning, watching, and trying, the program introduces both the depth of sumo and its appeal as entertainment. It is designed for a wide range of visitors, from those encountering sumo for the first time to those interested in Japanese culture.

Osaka Sumo Heya

A Gold and Navy Interior Blending Japanese Tradition

The interior uses gold and navy blue as its base colors. This combination of brightness and calm is meant to create a refined atmosphere with a Japanese character.

By presenting sumo in a special setting, the venue aims to offer a memorable Japanese culture experience that goes beyond ordinary sightseeing or watching a show.
