At Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden on Mt. Rokko, a highland-type colony of around 2,000 Nikko daylilies has reached full bloom beside the Rock Garden, carpeting the area in vivid yellow.
Known as a highland flower that ushers in a refreshing summer, the Nikko daylily has almost no wild habitat in the Kansai region or areas further west, making a colony spread this wide a rare sight. The bright yellow carpet of blooms also makes a striking backdrop for photos and videos.
About the Nikko Daylily (Hemerocallis dumortieri var. esculenta)
The Nikko daylily (family Asphodelaceae) is a perennial herb that grows in the moist meadows of the subalpine zone across Hokkaido and central Honshu and northward. The colonies at Oze and Kirigamine are especially well known, and plants typically grow 40 to 70 cm tall. Individual flowers are one-day blooms, opening in the morning and closing by evening, but because a single stem carries many buds that open in succession, the display can be enjoyed over an extended period.

Special Event: Plants and Insects
The garden is also hosting "Plants and Insects," a special exhibition on the relationships between plants and insects. Information panels are set up at points around the garden where visitors can observe insects, alongside a display of live rhinoceros beetles and carnivorous plants. Surrounded by the rich nature of Mt. Rokko, the exhibition offers a hands-on encounter with nature through these living exhibits.
