Suntory is turning its canned jasmine shochu green tea mix into a year-round, nationwide product, with the "Matsurika 〈Green Tea Mix・JR〉 Can" (「茉莉花〈緑茶割・ＪＲ〉缶」) set to hit store shelves across Japan from November 4 (Wednesday).
A Popular Way to Drink Jasmine Shochu
The jasmine shochu "Matsurika," first released in 2004, has built a loyal following for its pleasant aroma and its light, easy-drinking taste that pairs well with meals. Alongside "JJ" — jasmine shochu mixed with jasmine tea — the "JR" style, in which the shochu is mixed with green tea, has also proven popular, and sales volume from January to July reached 126% of the previous year's.
Last October, aiming to bring the appeal of the JR style to more customers in a convenient format, Suntory released a canned version, the "Matsurika 〈Green Tea Mix・JR〉 Can," as a limited item exclusively through convenience stores nationwide. This time, the company is expanding its distribution channels and relaunching the can as a year-round product to further grow its fan base.
About the Drink and Packaging
The can's contents combine a green tea brewed from a blend of three different types of tea leaves with different characteristics, blended to suit the taste of the "Matsurika" jasmine shochu, together with gyokuro shochu. The result is a drink with a pronounced green tea flavor, a soft mouthfeel, and a gentle aftertaste.
The package design uses text at the center of the can along with a tea-leaf motif to highlight that it's a green tea mix made with jasmine shochu, while the words "sugar-free, non-carbonated" and "4% alcohol" clearly communicate the drink's key characteristics.
