Traditional Bamboo Charcoal Basket Reborn as Everyday Storage, Now Available at Taketora

A bamboo basket once used to carry charcoal has been reimagined for modern living. The Japan-made Black-Dyed Rattan-Rimmed Sumitori Basket (黒染め籐縁巻炭斗籠, sumitori-kago) went on sale on October 20, 2026 at Taketora (虎斑竹専門店 竹虎), a specialty store for torafu bamboo operated by Yamagishi Bamboo Materials Store. The company is a bamboo-specialist maker that has manufactured and wholesaled bamboo materials and products since its founding in 1894 (Meiji 27). The basket can be enjoyed as storage for small everyday items or as interior decor.

Made in Japan: Black-Dyed Rattan-Rimmed Sumitori Basket. A traditional "hokori-ire" finish, given a modern edge by a white rattan rim.

The sumitori-kago is a tool that was used to hold and carry charcoal in the days when hibachi braziers and irori hearths were at the center of daily life. Before electricity and gas became widespread, charcoal was an essential fuel for Japanese households, and the baskets that carried it were a familiar sight. Even today, the basket still appears in the charcoal procedure (sumi-demae) of the tea ceremony, keeping its place in Japanese traditional culture. Charcoal is used less often now, but sturdy, beautiful bamboo baskets still hold an appeal that suits present-day living.

The basket's main feature is a traditional technique called "hokori-ire" (ホコリ入れ). Whitish, faded marks are applied to reddish-brown bamboo strips (higo), producing a distinctive look like an old tool that has been used for many years. There was a time when the technique was avoided because it made items look aged. Even so, the natural variations in color and the well-used character carry a handmade charm that evenly finished industrial products do not have. The weave of the bamboo stands out as the light hits it, and the basket shows a richer expression the longer it is viewed.

Natural-colored rattan is carefully wound around the rim of the basket, creating a contrast with the deep reddish-brown. The base has an ajiro weave, made by alternately interlacing bamboo strips, with reinforcing bamboo strips set in a cross shape, so the basket inherits the sturdiness expected of a tool made for carrying charcoal. Japanese bamboo craft values practicality as well as beauty, and the knowledge and ingenuity built up by artisans over many years can be seen in its details.

The inside is lined with washi paper and finished in a glossy black with water-based urethane varnish. The contrast between the rustic outside and the calm black inside is another distinctive point. Small items are less likely to catch on the bamboo weave, which makes the basket handy for storing accessories and stationery. It keeps a traditional look while including touches that make it easy to use in modern homes.

In the entryway it can hold slippers for guests, and in the living room it can store handkerchiefs and hand towels. Gathering yarn and craft supplies in it also makes it a companion for hobby time. Everyday items placed in the bamboo basket take on the feel of Japanese-style interior decor. It blends in naturally not only in Japanese-style rooms but also in Western-style rooms with wooden furniture, and simply placing it in a space adds warmth.

According to Taketora, the company's aim is not only to present traditional bamboo craft as a nostalgic tool but to have it used in present-day life. As lifestyles change and the bamboo items that were once familiar disappear, the company sees continuing to use them for new purposes as one way of passing traditional skills on to the future. From a tool for carrying charcoal to a storage basket that brightens daily life, Taketora hopes people will experience the lasting appeal of bamboo craft through the Black-Dyed Rattan-Rimmed Sumitori Basket.
