The teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins 2026-2027 executive committee (including Nishinippon Shimbun) is holding its third nighttime outdoor art exhibition, teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins 2026-2027, at Fukuoka Castle Ruins in Maizuru Park, Fukuoka, for the first time in seven years. The exhibition runs from Friday, October 30, 2026 through Monday, January 11, 2027 (a national holiday).
Construction of Fukuoka Castle began in 1601 and took seven years to complete; by scale, it is the largest castle in Kyushu. Its central area, including the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru, was built entirely of stone walls, earning it the alternate name Ishijo (Stone Castle). The still-beautiful stone walls are divided into four tiers, forming an especially expansive historic site today.
The exhibition transforms the central area of Fukuoka Castle Ruins, with its beautiful stone walls, into an art space that changes with the presence of the people who visit it.

When pushed by a person or wild animal, or knocked over by strong wind or rain, each Ovoid rights itself, glowing brightly and sounding a tone as it does. Nearby Ovoids respond one after another, carrying the light and sound onward.
Ever Blossoming Life Tree

On the giant tree, flowers bloom and scatter endlessly. Over the course of a single hour, a full year's worth of flowers bloom, scatter, and change. The flowers are born, bloom, and eventually scatter and die — repeating this cycle of birth and death forever.

An anonymous, diverse crowd of figures keeps walking along the stone walls of Fukuoka Castle Ruins. People choose something, discard something, and watch while facing this crowd.
Enso on Ancient Stone Wall

The black of the calligraphy drawn in light means the absence of light, indistinguishable from the shadows formed by the weathering of the stone wall over hundreds of years. The black of the calligraphy and the black created by that long span of time become one, endlessly writing an "ensō" onto the stone wall.
Stone Steps of Oblivion - Fukuoka Castle Ruins

The lights on the stone steps each act independently, flickering as if breathing slowly. When a person approaches, the lights on the steps glow brightly and sound a tone.

Some ウメノキゴケ naturally emit yellow or blue light under ultraviolet rays, but during the day this cannot be seen because other light is stronger. In the darkness, they flicker in vivid color under ultraviolet light — a trace of life that more than half a century has continued to trace onto the old plum tree.
Resonating Trees

The lights of the trees respond to the continuous light of Autonomous Resonating Life, glowing and sounding a tone. Nearby trees respond one after another, glowing and sounding their tones in turn.
When light surges from deeper among the trees, it means someone is present in that direction. People become more aware than usual of the presence of others sharing the same space, and of their surroundings.

An advance date-and-time reservation is required for weekends, national holidays, and December 29–31; no advance time slot is needed on other weekdays.
Tickets purchased on-site cost an additional ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for junior/senior high school and elementary school students.
If advance tickets sell out, same-day tickets will not be sold on-site.
