The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Returns in 4K for Its 20th Anniversary — Nationwide Revival Screening Coming Summer 2026

Mamoru Hosoda's celebrated anime film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is set to return to the big screen across Japan in summer 2026, as part of a 20th anniversary revival screening program. The screening will mark the first time the film has been shown nationwide in a 4K version.

Based on Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel, the film follows high school student Makoto as she discovers the ability to leap back in time. Through her adventures, she comes to understand the irreplaceable value of the moments in her life. The story's vibrant animation and vivid coming-of-age narrative struck a chord with audiences when the film first opened in July 2006, initially screening at just six theaters before word-of-mouth spread it nationwide. It ultimately screened at over 100 venues and ran for approximately 40 weeks — an exceptional theatrical run for an independent anime release.

The film also earned recognition internationally, winning awards at festivals including the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and helped establish Mamoru Hosoda's reputation as a major voice in animation.

Twenty years on, the film will be brought back to theaters in 4K resolution. While it will be screened using 4K source material, some theaters may present it in 2K depending on their equipment. The revival screening program also plans to include original attendee bonuses, with further details to be announced.
